The complaints from the banks (more so for credit card companies) to the Feds was that they believed that so many people were using credit cards to gamble with that they couldn't keep up with the payments and filing bankruptcy. BUT...
Any money they complained about didn't include that same customer from using that credit card or ATM card or bank personal checks at ANY USA land based casino or bingo hall and they STILL don't include that......they were ONLY complaining about online gambling. The FED law banned online gambling (except for certain sports sites and certain horse betting sites) because they stupidly DIDN'T go the extra mile and actually establish a Fed dept/commission that would have regulated online bingo sites that wanted to establish their base within the USA thereby being able to TAX the income by both the sites and the winners which would have created revenue for the USA.
You also have to take into consideration that all of this was happening during the last two years of the Bush Administration when banking and financial institutions were already falling into the toilet but it wasn't public knowledge at that time. Instead, the banks and credit card companies lobbied and put pressure via the 'moral and financial ruin' aspect stating that our country was being corrupted via gambling and that offshore online sites were taking advantage of USA citizens (which they were and which they continue to do since USA players have NOT stopped finding ways to fund those sites).
The Progressives within the Fed Government took away another one of our personal rights by determining that they knew better than we did about what we should and could do with our own money.....and it has only gotten worse. Progressives completely believe that bigger government and more control is the correct agenda and damn the Constitution.
