Does anyone have any statistics as to how many confirmed or assumed gambling addicts there are? How many are members of a 12 step program or is that info so fluid and confidential that you could never get your hands on it?

Who could ever really know? many of the programs that people are involved in for treatment are confidential and will not release any info about members. Also so many people with gambling problems are ashamed and afraid to come forward that we may never have a true gauge for how many really suffer from this addiction.

I have a friend who moved to Vegas with her husband and family and she started going to the casinos for fun but got addicted to the Keno machines. She was sooooo addicted that she couldn't miss a day at the casino playing. She was sure she was going to hit a JP on the next spin of the wheel that even when she was up a few hundred dollars she would keep playing until she lost it all that day. She ran up credit card bills and hid them from her husband for several years. Finally, something clicked and she went to gamblers' anonymous and shook the habit for many years. Then one day she was taking friends around town and played a machine and won a fair sized JP and was hooked all over again.

So I guess what I'm saying is it would be so very hard to keep track of those that go to GA get "cured" and then something happens and they end up back at whatever it is that hooked them in the first place.
